The Durango Creative District is proud to present the debut solo exhibition of local artist John Truitt, hosted in our Incubator for Emerging Artists at Stillwater Music. Truitt's journey is as captivating as his artwork; diagnosed as 2e (Twice Exceptional) gifted on the Autism Spectrum, Dyslexic, and with other differences at the age of 45, he embarked on a creative path shortly thereafter. After years spent in the realm of medical, dental, and medical device start-ups, he founded the On the Spectrum Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit committed to advocating for neurodiverse talents through self-discovery and social education. He now speaks professionally on these subjects and offers life coaching support for 2e adults and teens with ASD and learning differences. He and his wife Ashley are 8 year Durango residents and enjoy the outdoors and spending time with their dog Cassidy.

In Truitt's own words, his paintings are a dynamic evolution, a journey where each brushstroke unveils a deeper narrative. Rejecting the notion of painting tangible objects, he instead immerses himself in a world of color palettes, usually accompanied by music, allowing his Autism stimming to guide his hand. Describing this process as "surfing the spectrum," Truitt's works are imbued with a mélange of emotions and sensations. His art transcends the confines of representation, becoming an explosion of abstract expressions, a sanctuary where he can disconnect from the external noise and reconnect with his innermost self. This creative endeavor isn't merely a pastime but an indispensable resource, a vital aspect of his toolkit for navigating both the business world and the intricacies of everyday life, unlocking boundless wellsprings of creativity and resilience.
