natura fabricata, a solo exhibition featuring all new works by Durango-based woodworker and artist Ted Moore, will be on view at Stillwater Music’s new art and performance venue, in partnership with Durango Creative District. Moore’s influences are personal and academic, steeped in art history, medieval studies, and Southwestern ecology. His works reenvision pre-modern devotional imagery with a contemporary lens in order to contextualize people’s relationship to nature and to each other.
Fusing woodwork with painting, Moore’s work combines monochrome realism and intricately detailed woodwork with devotional imagery and cabinetry. The echoes of late medieval European art and Spanish colonial craft sound throughout Moore’s ink paintings, triptychs, escritorios, and retablos. The works featured in natura fabricata literally and figuratively re-frame the familiar into new landscapes, inviting the viewer to repicture our physical and cultural relationship to the land. For Moore, trees and wood are the means to deconstruct human-centered binaries – fabricated/natural, mundane/transcendent, finite/infinite, revealing the entangled commonality of our being.
“The wonder is that we can see these trees and not wonder more.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
